This brilliant short follows the quest of the titular character, Sintel.
We meet her as she is trekking across a snowy cliff and she is
attacked by some random marauder. She overcomes him by the barest
margin and collapses in the snow. She awakens in a shaman's hut and
tells why she is in this distant land.
Sintel was a lonely street urchin in some large nameless city. She eked out a living while living in ruins. One day, she came across an injured dragon. She adopted the dragon, nursed it to health, and named it Scales. She wasn't alone any more, at least for a little while. But Scales was taken from her and she has come a long way in search of her dragon.
The 15 minute short is entirely CGI. Its claim to fame is that it was produces with open source programs and that the film itself is available for download. With that in mind, the achievement is really impressive. Not only is the story tremendous, but so are the graphics. It has a very professional look and excellent production.
There are links to lots of extras that show the development of the character, the choreography of the fights, the mechanics of Blender software, and so forth. It is easy to spend a couple of hours on this short film.
