Arn

Our story opens with a pair of Arabs being chased by several other Arabs. Their situation looks bleak but the arrival of two Templars saves the day. One of the rescued Arabs is none other than Saladin. The lead Templar is Arn. The two fall to talking and Arn tells the unhappy tale of how he came to be a Templar.

Arn hails from Sweden. He was banished for a crime he did not commit, sentenced to spend 20 years on Crusade as penance. Through Arn, we see the fall of Jerusalem to the Muslims. Arn only survives because Saladin owed him his life.

Upon his return to Sweden, he is soon embroiled in a war over who should be king. His vast experience proves key.

The movie is a bit long and has moments that drag. Two stories are told though the movie: Arn's and his fiance, Cecilia's. While Arn was sent to fight in the Holy Land, Cecilia spent her time in a nunnery, which was not very exciting by comparison.

Templars are romantic figures, an order of paladins in a non-magical world. They mostly fall far short of the Lawful Good ideals they are supposed to uphold. Some of these paladins are nasty backstabbing villains. However, these paladins don't have Detect Evil at will so it is harder to root out the bad apples.
